The Flushing House celebrated its 50th anniversary during its fifth annual “Jazz in the Sky” event on Friday, Sept. 13.
Residents of the independent living senior apartments gathered with their families at the rooftop of the building, located at 38-20 Bowne St. in Flushing, to take part in the festivities, enjoying the jazz music and fine dining, including a sushi bar. Additionally, there were raffles and a silent auction, with proceeds benefitting the George Nussbaum Fund.
The live jazz music at the event was provided by the Brooklyn Porch Band and Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra. More than 250 tickets ended up being sold for this event.
“We are glad that you’re here, we’re thrilled that you’re willing to support this organization,” Flushing House President Douglas Kurtz said to the attendees. “Through the 50 years that Flushing House has been here, we have really touched the lives of tens of thousands of individuals. We do this night for fundraising. Flushing House has never asked anyone to leave Flushing House due to their inability to pay. If individuals do run out of money or don’t have enough, we make it work for them and that’s been how it has been for 50 years.”
Built in 1974, the Flushing House is an innovative retirement residence was one of the first of its kind to independent living with supportive services for older adults.
