Council Member Joann Ariola’s (D-32) office is hosting a veterans sheet collection drive now through Nov. 1. Residents interested in supporting the initiative can donate new full and queen bed sheets to be given to veterans living in Veterans Homes across New York City.

Drop-off locations include the Council Member’s Ozone Park office at 93-06 101 Ave; her Rockaway office at 14-12 Beach Channel Drive; and Neir’s Tavern at 87-48 78th St., Woodhaven.

Council Member Ariola told QNS that the drive is a way to give back to veterans who have given their all to the American people.

“My heart broke when I heard from several veterans organizations that members in need were going to bed at night with torn, old, dirty sheets, and I knew that I had to do something about it. That’s why I’m hosting this drive so that veterans in need know that their service is not forgotten, and they have a grateful community behind them,” she said,

Ariola said that the sheets will support veterans living in the designated housing and those seeking to transition out of the facilities.

“This population of veterans looking to regain their footing is often overlooked in the grand scheme of things, but they still need our help, and the people of District 32 are here to provide for them,” she said.

This month’s initiative is one of many events Ariola has hosted for the veteran community throughout the past year.

In July, Ariola’s office hosted a “Hero Story Time” to connect veterans and first responders with local children through live readings of children’s books.

Last month, Ariola co-named the corner of Eldert Lane and Rockaway Blvd. “American Legion Square” in recognition of American Legion Post 118 and the work the American Legion does on behalf of the nation’s veterans.

Back in February, Ariola hosted a Valentine’s for Veterans giveaway, where local veterans received Valentine’s Day packages with candies and treats, socks, toothpaste, and other supplies donated by District 32 residents. Home Depot also made a significant donation of paper towels, gloves, and other supplies for the veterans.
