Council Member Robert Holden has condemned a troubling rise in harassment, shoplifting, and anti-Asian hate incidents targeting Mr. Wish, a popular bubble tea shop in Ridgewood.
A group of teenagers has allegedly been terrorizing the business, shouting racial slurs, using profanity, and stealing items, according to Holden’s office. Videos of the incidents, which have circulated on social media, have sparked outrage and concern among community members.
The small business has been serving Ridgewood customers since August 2020, and staff members have reached out online for support.
“What started out as rare incidences have now become very frequent and increasingly aggressive. We are concerned not only about our store and employees but also the welfare of our patrons too, who have become victims of this as well. We have reached out to the NYPD and submitted our security footage, but these are only reactive, not preventative, measures,” a staff member wrote on Facebook.
Holden, accompanied by staffer Phil Wong, visited Mr. Wish on Tuesday, Jan. 21, to meet with the owner and discuss the ongoing situation. During the visit, Holden strongly condemned these acts and pledged his full support in addressing the issue.
“Hate and criminal behavior have no place in my district, and even more so in our small businesses who work tirelessly to provide a service to the neighborhood and give people employment,” Holden stated. “I spoke with Captain Karem Chowdhury of the 104th Precinct, and I will be engaging with our local schools to ensure this behavior ceases immediately. Parents have to do a better job in knowing what their kids are up to.”
Holden emphasized that these actions would not be tolerated and that steps would be taken to identify those responsible. He is working closely with the 104th Precinct and local schools to address the situation and prevent future incidents.
Mr. Wish, located at 6627 Fresh Pond Rd. in Ridgewood, specializes in creative bubble teas and fruit beverages.
Originating from Taiwan, Mr. Wish has now spread worldwide, with stores in many U.S. states, including California, Minnesota, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and, of course, New York.
In addition to its Ridgewood location, the popular tea shop also operates nearby in Kew Gardens, Great Neck, Franklin Square, and Brooklyn.
Holden’s office is committed to continuing its collaboration with local law enforcement and schools to prevent further harassment and promote education on the harmful effects of such behavior. Meanwhile, he is focusing on ensuring that Ridgewood remains a welcoming and safe place for all and that businesses like Mr. Wish can continue to thrive without fear of harassment or crime.
Community members who have witnessed or have any information regarding these incidents are encouraged to contact the 104th Precinct or Holden’s office.
