Infant Was Taken From Foster Mom
The NYPD arrested an Ozone Park woman last Thursday, Mar. 15 for fleeing from Mount Sinai Queens Hospital with her eight-month-old daughter, who was currently living with a foster parent.
Leila Rajnarine, 40, of 101st Avenue, was charged with second-degree custodial interference and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Queens County District Attorney’s Office. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of up to one year in prison.
According to the NYPD, Rajnarine accompanied her daughter and the infant’s foster mother to the hospital’s pediatric center on Mar. 14 for a regular check-up. While the foster mother and a doctor were speaking in another room, Rajnarine allegedly took the infant and fled.
During a search of the surrounding area, officers assigned to the Patrol Bureau Queens South Task Force saw someone resembling Rajnarine’s description inside a livery car later that day at 133rd Street and 101st Avenue in Jamaica. They pulled the vehicle over to find Rajnarine and the infant inside, in stable condition. The mother was immediately taken into custody.
Rajnarine appeared in court on Friday, Mar. 16 and did not post the required $1,000 bond. She was due back in court on Wednesday, Mar. 21.
