A Jamaica man was sentenced for his role in violently beating a Bangladeshi man to death during a botched robbery attempt in Richmond Hill in 2014, prosecutors announced on Thursday.
Carlos Genno, 27, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in April. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison, to be followed by five years’ post release supervision.
Genno’s co-defendant, 25-year-old Nestor Rodriguez, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in January and is currently serving 18 years in prison, also to be followed by five years’ post release supervision.
“The defendant in this case – along with a co-defendant – viciously pummeled an innocent man to death and left him bleeding to death on a Queens sidewalk,” said acting District Attorney John M. Ryan. “This was an unprovoked and senseless act of violence. The defendant will be incarcerated for a long time as a result of his criminal actions.”
According to charges, at around 3:30 a.m. on July 9, 2014, the victim, 55-year-old Nazmul Islam, was walking near 76th Street and Atlantic Avenue when he was approached by Genno and Rodriguez, who punched and choked Islam until he lost consciousness.
Genno and Rodriguez then searched Islam’s pockets and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported Islam to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
