Jamaica man convicted of assaulting grandma

By Betsy Scheinbart

A Jamaica man was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting his own grandmother in 1999, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Gary Williams, 38, of 120-06 142nd St. in Jamaica was found guilty of sodomy in the first degree after a jury trial before State Supreme Court Justice Richard Butcher, Brown said.

On Nov. 5, Butcher was expected to sentence Williams to the maximum term of 25 years to life in prison as a persistent felon, Brown said.

In early 1999, Williams, a recent parolee from prison who served time for an attempted robbery conviction, went to live with his grandmother, Brown said. In the early morning hours of Feb. 5, 1999, he forcibly sodomized her at knifepoint, Brown said.

“This was an incredibly heinous crime — a grandson sexually assaulting his own grandmother at knifepoint,” Brown said. “The victim showed remarkable courage and strength in coming forward.”
