A 12-year-old Queens Village girl who police said stabbed herself in the chest last week after an apparent argument with her mother was released from Long Island Jewish Medical Center Monday.
Police said the seventh-grader had been arguing with her mother on the phone moments before she stabbed herself with a kitchen knife, burst out of her home on 216th Street and ran down the street trailing blood.
The girl, who police described as despondent, ran about eight blocks with an open wound in her chest to 212th Street and Jamaica Avenue in Queens Village where she climbed into a Dumpster, authorities said.
The girl’s name was withheld because of her age.
Once police arrived on the scene the girl was taken to LIJ. A spokesman for the New Hyde Park hospital said when the girl was brought in, she was in critical condition. She was upgraded to stable condition over the weekend and then released Monday.
According to Newsday, a male friend of the girl said she ran from her house screaming that she had just stabbed herself. He said he first thought his friend was joking until he saw the blood trailing down her leg.
He said when his 12-year-old friend was running up the street, she tried to dash out in front of moving traffic and kept saying that she wanted to die.
Newsday reported that the police said the girl, a student at IS 109 at 213-10 92nd Ave. in Queens Village, was arguing with her mother on the telephone about the girl’s relationship with her boyfriend.
The paper said the girl ran to her neighbor’s home after stabbing herself, but when the neighbor ran to call 911, the seventh grader ran up the street and hid in a Dumpster.
Police said there were no reports of domestic violence within the family and the parents would not be facing criminal charges.
