Sunnysider Is Voice Of Democracy

Sunnyside resident Victoria Sehgal is the voice of democracy. At least that was what she was awarded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US after beating out thousands of participants to earn the honor.
The John V. Daniels Jr. Award was given to Sehgal after winning a competition entitled "The Obligations of Freedom." For the award, students were asked to compose and recite, on tape, an essay with an American theme. The tapes were then judged by members of the post or the post auxiliary and the first place winner moves on the next level.
Sehgal is a junior at Bard High School Early College in Manhattan. In her school, she is the founder and president of the community service club, editor of her school newspaper "The Horizon," editorial member of the literary magazine, Student Council junior class representative and first violin of her school orchestra. In her small amount of spare time, she tutors senior citizens in the use of computers and the Internet and, until recently, volunteered at the Queens Borough Public Library.
The Daniels Post members awarded Sehgal a cash prize and a certificate of appreciation for participating in the contest.
