Bayside, Aviation Chosen For National Honor

Accomplished Queens high schools Bayside and Aviation are two of 75 schools nationwide chosen to participate in a five-year education initiative co-sponsored by the International Center for Leadership in Education and the Council of Chief State School Officers.
Only four schools were chosen in all of New York City.
The purpose of the program is to examine the most successful school policies and practices that have helped schools like Bayside and Aviation excel, in order to imitate them on a national level.
The program encompasses the schools’ performances over the course of a three-year academic span.
“This is really a big honor for us,” said Judith Tarlo, principal of Bayside High School for the last five years. “We have a very diverse student population and really believe that all students can learn. We focus on making the students feel comfortable, involved in the student life and above all, safe.”
Tarlo attributes her school’s successful narrowing of the achievement gap to the teachers.
“We have very high standards for the teachers we hire,” she said. “They uphold the school’s philosophy and really care. That’s what we look for.”
