As a kickoff to the Fourth of July weekend, the Queens Historical Society (QHS) will premiere its new “Summer In The Park” children’s educational workshop.
Entitled “Our Founding Fathers: An Independence Day Craft Workshop,” and launching on Thursday, June 29, the program is a fun educational workshop geared for children eight to 13.
Participating students will learn the significance of the holiday and the contributions of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to our country’s history via activity books, festive arts and crafts and a treasure hunt.
Located next to QHS Flushing headquarters, Kingsland Homestead at 143-35 37th Avenue in Weeping Beech Park, the workshops are designed to give children summer alternatives to beach and amusement park excursions. The first workshop begins at 2:30 p.m. and is one of three workshops scheduled for the summer.
Taking advantage of the numerous children enjoying the playground inside Weeping Beech Park and capitalizing on it’s usefulness as a beautiful backdrop, Katrina Rabin, program director for QHS decided to extend their school year educational programs into the summer.
The rain date of the workshop is Saturday, July 8th at 2:30 p.m. There is a five dollar materials fee and a reservation is required one week prior to the workshop. The workshop is limited to 40 children, who will be supervised by the QHS staff consisting of teachers and interns.
Other workshops scheduled in the series are the Green Thumb, gardening workshop on July 18th and the Summer Scrapbook workshop scheduled on August 15th. For more information call QHS at 718-939-0647 or go to www.QueensHistoricalSociety.org
