Lady Stanners unbeaten with 4-0 record

With an almost completely new lineup, Maureen Rosenbaum wasn’t sure what to expect this spring. Molloy’s manager was pleasantly surprised when the team split four games in the Sports Plus Tournament in Chesterfield, Virginia after barely getting onto the field because of inclement weather.
That experience, Rosenbaum said, is the reason for the team’s good start. “We were outdoors a lot,” she said after the Stanners improved to 4-0 in league play with a dominant 8-1 victory over Mary Louis. “I think it’s showing now, to be honest. … If we stayed in New York, we would have been on the dirt only a few times. I know the trip down to Virginia made us stronger.”
In the win over the previously undefeated Hilltoppers, Molloy’s first-place offense was again dynamic. Juniors Tiffany Ott and Jennie Angelone each drove in three runs and collected three hits apiece in support of senior Kayley Ferran.
“We’ve been hitting with the pitch and the balls just seem to be falling for us,” Rosenbaum said of her lineup, which is averaging nine runs a game so far. “Sometimes, it’s just the luck. But we’re playing well. They are just producing runs. If I call for a bunt, the bunt has been good. If I call for hit and run … everything that I call for seems to be going right. Right now it’s working.”
Ferran should not be lost in the equation, either. She has won three times already, going the distance in wins over Mary Louis, Christ the King, and fierce rival and defending Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan champion St. Francis Prep. On Monday, she allowed just five hits and struck out five. In 21 innings so far, the fire-balling right-hander has allowed just three earned runs.
“The confidence just developed early,” Rosenbaum said of her young team. “And besides that, we have some kids coming up from jayvee, which won the championship the last few years. Overall, it seems to be coming together.”
