Campus Magnet star chooses Maine

When his players are looking at college, Charles Granby always advises them to gauge the interest level from the school, not just the name. Sometimes, the longtime Campus Magnet basketball coach tells them, the smaller conference is the better choice.
“I try to tell the kids bigger is not always better,” he said. “Go someplace where they want you in the system.”
Malachi Peay, the Bulldogs’ talented 6-foot-4 wing who can play small forward and both guard positions, took that advice to heart. Eschewing bigger offers, he recently picked Maine of the America East Conference. Peay, who averaged 21 points and five rebounds per game this season, and led Campus Magnet to the Queens Borough title as a junior, will see minutes as a freshman off the bench, and get a chance to start soon thereafter.
“I think he will excel there,” Granby said. “They wanted him. The coaches like him. He meshes well with the players they have there. … Malachi is somebody people might have missed the boat on. He is ambidextrous; he can go to the basket with either hand.”
