Bowlers want to spare Woodhaven Lanes

It isn’t a strike - it’s a throng of local bowlers, who joined with employees of the Woodhaven Lanes for another demonstration, on Saturday, April 26.
They want the owner, Manhattan-based real estate company Parkwill Management, to spare the bowling alley, which has been a community focal point for nearly 50 years.
The company hired a Nassau County realtor to frame the offer as the “Redevelopment of Woodhaven Lanes.”
They’re crying “foul,” saying they don’t need another big box store in the area, between Glendale and Forest Hills.
There’s a bowling alley operator who wants to keep it operating, and the demonstrators got some good news from local attorney and City Council candidate Anthony Como.
Como did a little brokering of his own, and arranged a meeting with State Senator Serphin Maltese, Parkwill president Robert Corroon, operator John LaSpina, community activist Jim Santora and himself at Maltese’s Howard Beach office, on Friday, May 2.
“You don’t have to show up - send me your emails and letters and I’ll bring them to the meeting,” Como told the hopeful crowd, before leaving for another commitment.
If the parties strike a deal, the bowling leagues and groups who have been coming to the lanes for generations won’t have to split up.
Here’s hoping they keep their eye on the ball.
