Woodhaven murder-suicide may have been mercy killing

In an apparent murder-suicide, 65-year-old Salvatore Rovino appears to have taken the life of his 62-year-old wife Evelyn, before turning the gun on himself.
At around 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, the couple’s 44-year-old son, Carl Rovino, entered his parents’ 86-11 75th Street apartment in Woodhaven only to find the couple unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the head.
There were no signs of forced entry and a .38 caliber revolver was recovered at the scene, police said.
According to published reports, neighbors said Evelyn suffered from emphysema, which left her barely able to breath, and it appeared that Carl may have taken her life in an effort to end her pain.
A spokesperson with the NYPD said, “the investigation is still ongoing. As far as a murder-homicide suicide the detectives will be the ones who determine that.”
