Crowley visits Garden School students

Congressmember Joseph Crowley recently visited Garden School, an independent school in Jackson Heights, to give a speech about the importance of being a good citizen. Crowley’s visit marked the beginning of Garden School’s year-long program about citizenship.
Crowley spoke to more than 300 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade about how they can play a helpful part in their neighborhood and school, which is located at 33-16 79th Street.
Crowley’s speech helped the students grasp the citizenship concept taught at Garden School, said Richard Marotta, headmaster. “We’re stressing the idea of working in a community - that community can be as small as a classroom,” Marotta explained, adding that his students have been involved in numerous volunteer efforts.
“You cannot have citizenship understanding without being properly instructed,” said Crowley after the event. It isn’t always obvious how to contribute to one’s community, he explained.
