Woman dies under LIRR train

An unidentified woman found her way onto the tracks of the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Washington Line, and it cost her life.

The woman, described as an adult Asian, was struck by an eastbound train at 12:10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, in the vicinity of 94th Street in East Elmhurst.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, after her body was recovered from under the fourth car of the train. MTA Police have not disclosed the woman’s identity or explained why she was on the track, but detectives say they are treating the case as a possible suicide and are still investigating.

The incident forced the MTA to cut power on the line, and resulted in the cancellation of four eastbound and two westbound trains.

Over 100 passengers were on the train that had left Penn Station at 11:50 a.m. and was due in Port Washington at 12:35 p.m. They were removed by a “side to side evacuation procedure” to another train that got them to their destinations about 90 minutes late, according to an MTA spokesperson.
