Seeking Miss Howard Beach contestants

Is your daughter supremely talented? Is she outgoing? Is she involved in her community?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then sign her up for the upcoming Miss Howard Beach Pageant.

It all started when Victoria Pellegrino, a talent agent and pageant winner herself, saw the potential of those taking acting classes at the local youth center.

“There is so much talent right here in this area,” she said, “that we decided we should showcase the girls’ talent.”

Teaming up with Frances O. Scarantino of Reach for the S.T.A.R.S., a pageant was born.

The pair has been shocked by the number of people interested.

“So many people have been interested,” said Scarantino. “We weren’t expecting so many.”

Aside from showcasing well-rounded girls between the ages of four and 21 from the neighborhood, the pageant co-directors stress that girls get involved in the community – by cleaning up Charles Park, volunteering at the food pantry and more.

They confirmed that a producer has approached them about the idea that MTV may be interested.

“If MTV does decide to run with the idea and it does get produced – and those are both big ‘ifs’ – all contestants will be notified and would have to sign consent forms in order to appear on television,” Scarantino said.

All contestants are required to obtain up to $300 in sponsorships. Sponsors will be recognized in the printed journal handed out to each contestant and audience members on the night of the event, in print media, verbally at the event, with photos in their place of business, in addition to having many other opportunities to benefit from sponsoring a young lady for this event.

“We are looking for a nice girl next door,” said Pellegrino. “We want to show Howard Beach in a positive way. We’re hoping this will be the first of many [pageants].”

If you are a young lady between the ages of four and 21, and would like to compete in the Miss Howard Beach Pageant, call 718-845-1429 as soon as possible. The deadline is approaching.
