During November’s National HerWorld month, New York City high school girls were encouraged to pursue science, technology, engineering and math careers.
About 350 students attended New York’s DeVry University HerWorld event, which was held at The Sentry in Manhattan on Friday, November 19.
DeVry University’s HerWorld program began about 13 years ago. The goal of it is to provide “an opportunity for high school girls to explore post-graduation opportunities and introduce them to in-demand careers of the 21st century, including careers in science, technology, engineering and math.”
This is accomplished through educational conferences and confidence-building activities. In addition to interacting with peers, the students who participate also get to hear from local female community leaders.
The featured speaker of the recent event was mathematician and best-selling author Danica McKeller, who is also an actress who was in “The Wonder Years.” McKeller hosted events throughout November “in an effort to help young women across the country reach their full potential.”
The recent New York event left an impression on Wilnie Angibeau, a student from August Martin High School in Jamaica.
“Today, I learned how to have a lot of confidence in myself and self-esteem. I now know that you have to work hard to get to what you want, and I have to believe in myself if I want to succeed,” she said. “I’ve realized that I have to push myself to study math and take my career seriously.”
