Walmart lures Queens customers with online pickups

Walmart has introduced a way to increase its presence in Queens without establishing its first official store in New York City.

The retail giant announced its plan to launch in-store pickup service this June in Queens expanding its multichannel services, a Walmart release said.

Walmart multichannel services are various methods that customers can purchase items from Walmart through the internet, and have the products available for pick up.

The “Pick Up Today” program will allow Queens shoppers to buy products online from the Walmart in Valley Stream before 6 p.m., and pick up their orders in about four hours from that store. Orders after 6 p.m. will be available for pickup at 10 a.m. the next day.

“Walmart is always looking for ways to better serve our Queens customers,” said Steven Restivo, Walmart director of community affairs. “‘The ‘Pick Up Today’ program makes it even easier for them to take advantage of Walmart’s everyday low prices.”

The program will be available in almost 3,600 Walmart stores nationwide and expand to include up to 40,000 items from numerous categories such as electronics, household appliances, baby products, toys, outdoor living, home décor and hardware.

“Pick Up Today” increases the multichannel services that Walmart already has available to Queens, which includes Site-to-Store, FedEx Site-to-Store, and Walmart Mobile.

The Site to Store service, which is now in its fifth year, allows customers to order products from Walmart’s web site and have the products shipped free to a local Walmart store for pick up in approximately four to seven days. The products from this service cannot be found in stores, and helps shoppers save on shipping expenses.

FedEx Site-to-Store gives Queens shoppers the ability to order online and ship items free to a participating FedEx in Queens, such as 3146 Steinway Street, 158-14 Northern Boulevard and 11810 Queens Boulevard locations.

Walmart mobile makes it easy to shop from the web site through the Walmart iPhone app and mobile web browser. Customers can now refill Walmart Pharmacy prescriptions and order photo prints for pick up directly from their mobile web browser at m.walmart.com.
