A civic organization dedicated to beautifying neglected and often filthy strips of land along train tracks was at it again in Glendale over the weekend.
Civics United for Railroad Environmental Solutions hosted a cleanup session along Edsall Avenue, which runs between 71st and 73rd places near the southern border of All Faiths Cemetery.
State Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi (D-Forest Hills) got his hands dirty with five other workers he brought to the cleanup.
Hevesi’s colleague, state Assemblyman Michael Miller (D-Woodhaven), provided lunch for the roughly 30 volunteers who showed up to work shovels and brooms as they cleared away brush and garbage.
Residents from the neighborhood were joined by students from the International Trade Student Association from the Fashion Institute of Technology.
In addition to cleaning up the trash, volunteers also planted flowers in a large pot along the strip as they toiled for nearly five hours.
It was the second cleanup session in the area hosted by CURES and in partnership with the Glendale Civic Association.
A third session will kick off Saturday at 10 a.m.
Earlier this year, CURES led a similar community cleanup effort along Shaler Avenue in Ridgewood.
