August Martin loses high school football championship

The August Martin Falcons’ comeback attempt came up short in the Bowl Division Championship against the James Madison Knights, as they lost 22-20. The Falcons, who were without their starting quarterback, Ricky Dunbar, due to injury, trailed 22-7 before falling short in the end. The Falcons allowed the Knights to compile 179 offensive yards with senior quarterback Berkay Dagbolen completing seven out of 10 passing attempts for 68 yards. He also threw a touchdown. In addition to the passing touchdown, Dagbolen scored one on the ground, rushing for 20 yards on five attempts.

Junior Corey Woods rushed for 40 yards on nine attempts which led the Knights. Senior Teqeil Evans added 29 yards on seven attempts while fellow senior Adeyinka Anifowoshe added 22 yards on five attempts, and also caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Dellon Peters had a 66-yard kickoff return.

On defense, the Knights had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Junior Erick Tinsley led the team with 21 tackles and had one of the interceptions with Anifowoshe grabbing the other pick. This marks the second time in three years that the Falcons have lost in the Bowl Championship game – in 2010 the Falcons lost by a score of 29-28 at the hands of the Thomas Jefferson Orange Wave.
