Say Midville Man Went On Break-In Spree

Shortly after allegedly making several break-in attempts at homes and parked vehicles around Glendale last Tuesday morning, May 1, a Middle Village man suspected in the crime spree was taken into custody by police, it was reported.

He was identified by law enforcement sources as 22-year-old Joseph Ancona of 69th Road.

Members of the 104th precinct’s Day Tour Crime Team stopped Ancona in the vicinity of Cooper and Metropolitan avenues at around 8:45 a.m. last Tuesday after receiving a call regarding a suspicious male in the area. Following questioning, Ancona was reportedly arrested by police and charged with weapons possession.

Upon further investigation, authorities noted, police learned that Ancona was allegedly responsible for numerous burglary attempts at various Glendale locations earlier that morning.

According to the criminal complaint provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, the thefts took place between 7 and 8:30 a.m. along the dead end block of 71st Street near Myrtle Avenue and in the vicinity of 78th Street and 78th Avenue.

Police said that Ancona allegedly broke into two separate vehicles on 71st Street and 78th Street and removed undisclosed property. It was further noted that he allegedly attempted to break into a home along 71st Street, causing damage to a window frame of a residence.

Eyewitness along 78th Street reported seeing a man fitting Ancona’s description attempting to break into several vehicles along the block and burglarize a pair of residences before fleeing from the scene, according to law enforcement sources.

Ancona was charged with three counts of second-degree attempted burglary, six counts of criminal trespass, two counts of criminal mischief, two counts of petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

According to a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown, the suspect was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court last Wednesday, May 2, and ordered held on $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court on May 18.
