FLUSHING — Tech-savvy cops from the 109th Precinct nabbed an alleged iPhone thief last month using the latest in GPS tracking software, a police source told TimesLedger Newspapers.
On June 27 at about 3 p.m., a 15-year-old girl walked into the 109th Precinct and not only told officers that her white iPhone was stolen, but also showed them the location of the device, police said.
The girl was using software to track the location of her phone on her iPad, according to police.
Another officer at the precinct downloaded the information to his own phone and within 30 minutes traced the signal to 35-20 Levitt St., where police arrested 23-year-old Gabriel Bazan.
Bazan was in possession of the phone, which was protected by a green case complete with cat ears, police said.
The NYPD has repeatedly urged anyone who purchases an iPhone to register the device and allow it to be tracked via software.
