Queens’ GOP operative John Haggerty is back behind bars, the Manhattan DA said.
Haggerty headed back to prison Monday after losing an appeal of his 2011 election embezzlement scheme in June, according to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s office.
The DA said Haggerty was initially sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years. He has served about five months of this sentence.
Haggerty was convicted in 2011 in a ploy to funnel nearly $1 million from former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s election campaign toward buying his childhood home in Forest Hills.
The state Court of Appeals ruled against Haggerty’s attorneys, who argued his previous trial violated the best evidence rule by not seeking original written documents showing who controlled the Michael R. Bloomberg Revocable Trust that provided the money in question.
