Students in Flushing can now get hands-on experience with new technologies right in their own school.
Officials cut the ribbon on a brand-new STEAM SmartLab and broadcast studio at P.S. 201: The Discovery School, on Sept. 19. Funding for the new technology was allocated by Councilman Rory Lancman and the federal Magnet Schools Assistance Program.
The specialized SmartLab will enable students to create and develop their own projects using a 3-D printer and software engineering and robotics technology. The broadcast studio will allow students to deliver messages and daily announcements directly into the school’s classrooms.
The new resources will impact the school’s 465 students, ranging from pre-K through fifth grade, and its future learners.
“Not only will this create a more dynamic learning experience in school, but it will better prepare students to excel in our interconnected and technologically driven world,” Lancman said. “I’m proud to help make the STEAM SmartLab and Broadcast Studio a reality at P.S. 201Q, and I look forward to seeing the new skills students acquire through this innovative learning environment.”
Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, Congresswoman Grace Meng, District Superintendent Danielle DiMango, school administrators and parents also attended the ribbon cutting.
“Within these learning environments, the development of college, career and life readiness is at the fore as students learn to work on 21st-century skills while having the opportunity to experience the innovative technology that STEAM education has to offer,” Principal Rebecca Lozada said.
