Police have put a name to the face of the attacker who smacked around a 94-year-old man during an argument in Jackson Heights earlier this year.
Detectives need the public’s help in finding George Powell, 58, for the May 18 assault that occurred on the stoop of the victim’s 94th Street home.
At 12:18 p.m. that day, law enforcement sources said, Powell allegedly stopped in front of the home as the 94-year-old man stood on the stoop. Seconds later, they became embroiled in a verbal argument that led Powell to climb the steps and directly confront the victim.
During the argument, the victim pushed Powell back when he got too close. Powell then responded by smacking the senior in the face, sending his eyeglasses off his face and down to the sidewalk.
The video footage showed the man taking a swipe at Powell with his cane, but missing. Powell is then seen stepping on the victim’s glasses as he left the location.
Officers from the 115th Precinct responded to the incident; the victim suffered a small laceration to his nose and refused medical attention.
Police said that Powell is 58 years of age and stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing about 160 pounds, with brown eyes, a partially bald head and a slight beard. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the word “WESTCHESTER” written on the front, dark jeans and black boots.
Anyone with information regarding Powell’s whereabouts can call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (for Spanish, dial 888-57-PISTA), visit the Crime Stoppers website or send a text message to 274637 (CRIMES), then enter TIP577. All calls and messages are kept confidential.
