As the calendar flips to a new month, Flushing Town Hall has a variety of upcoming events this October. From conferences to musical performances, there are plenty of events that are sure to entertain and educate attendees.
Archtober/Engage: Deep Listening for Artists and Architects: Saturday, Oct. 1, 1 p.m.
Flushing Town Hall is partnering with Archtober, New York City’s Architecture and Design Month, to host the annual festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions taking place during the month and with American Institute of Architecture Queens and the Queens Foundation for Architecture.
Artists and architects are invited to take part in a workshop involving deep listening as a key skill for art and architecture, applicable to their work with public agencies, collaborators, communities and co-workers. Tickets for the event are free for Flushing Town Hall and American Institute of Architecture Queens members, seniors and students with IDs. All other in-person tickets are $10 each.
Arts Grants in Queens – Information Sessions: Tuesday, Oct. 4; Thursday, Oct. 13; Wednesday, Oct. 19; Tuesday, Oct. 25; Wednesday, Oct. 26; Thursday, Oct. 27, 6 p.m.
Flushing Town Hall’s Arts Services Department will hold an info session for attendees to learn about the arts grants for Queens. Guidelines, grant cycle schedules and best application practices will be reviewed. All sessions listed will be held in person and in English unless otherwise noted. RSVPs are required. Admission is free.
First-time applicants are required to attend an information session before applying. Any member of an organization or artist group may attend an info session on behalf of their group. Artists and organizations who applied this year aren’t required to attend, although it is suggested joining to learn more about the program and to have questions answered. Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jam: Wednesday, Oct. 12, 7 p.m.
Monthly Jazz Jams return live to Flushing Town Hall. Open to professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz, music educators and serious hobbyists, musicians are invited to perform at Flushing Town Hall. All are welcome, regardless of instrument. A Steinway baby grand and drum kit will be available. Health and safety protocols will be in place. Attendees are advised to bring a mask and welcome to bring their own microphone. House band and jam sessions are led by Carol Sudhalter, with Joe Vincent Tranchina, Scott Neumann and Eric Lemon.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation Inc. Tickets are free for Flushing Town Hall members, students and musicians who will perform. For all others, tickets are $10 each.
FTH Professional Development Workshop: Artists in the Community: Thursday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
During this conversation, artists from the Social Practice CUNY program, Naomi Kuo and Cristina Ferrigno, will speak. Their practices are based in working with the community. They’ll discuss best practices when connecting with people to create art and tell their stories.
Among the topics Kuo and Ferrigno will speak about are as follows:
• What is “community art”?
• How community work plays a role in an artistic practice.
• Ways to make deep lasting connections within the community that remain even after a project is finished.
• How to purposefully work with community members – not just “parachuting” in for the sake of the project.
Presented in partnership with Social Practice CUNY, admission to the event is free. It will include a moderated conversation with space for a Q&A session.
“The Swinging Sounds of Coleman Hawkins” Featuring Lew Tabackin and His Ensemble: Friday, Oct. 14, 8 p.m.
Tabackin and his ensemble will play tribute to jazz great Coleman Hawkins live at the historic Flushing Town Hall Theater. The location is fitting due to its significance along the Queens Jazz Trail.
Tickets for the event will be available for those who wish to see it both virtually and in person. Virtual tickets are $10. In-person tickets are $40 for the public, $32 for Flushing Town Hall members and $20 for students with IDs. Additionally, table packages for two with refreshments and drinks will also be available for purchase. The packages are $130 for the public and $11o for Flushing Town Hall members.
Mini-Global Mashup: Syria Meets Lumbee/Tuscarora: Sunday, Oct. 16, 1 p.m.
Curated by acclaimed trumpeter and composer Frank London of The Klezmatics, the Mini-Global Mashup series is bringing together two amazing global music artists along with accompanists for an afternoon of music, conversation and exploration.
“Mini-Global Mashup: Syria Meets Lumbee/Tuscarora” will feature Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Indigenous artist Charly Lowry. There will be a post-show Q&A session. The Mini-Global Mashup concert series is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Center for Cultural Vibrancy.
The event will be available both virtually and in person. Tickets to watch it virtually are $5 while in-person tickets are $15 for the public and $12 for Flushing Town Hall members.
Five Borough Music Festival: 5 Borough Songbook, Volume III: Friday, Oct. 21, 7 p.m.
Five Borough Music Festival’s 2022-2023 Season continues with the world premiere of the Five Borough Songbook, Volume III. This marks the third time Flushing Town Hall is welcoming back the Five Boroughs Music Festival.
A special co-production with On Site Opera, this new cycle of 15 songs, duets and ensembles by 15 composers was commissioned in honor of 5 Borough Music Festival’s 15th anniversary and On Site Opera’s 10th anniversary seasons. It also marks the third installment of 5 Borough Music Festival’s critically acclaimed quinquennial Five Borough Songbook project.
Tickets to the event are $15 for Flushing Town Hall members, seniors and students and $25 for the public.
Archtober: Building of the Day Tour: Saturday, Oct. 22, 3 p.m.
Flushing Town Hall is again partnering with Archtober for the annual festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions taking place during October, as well as the American Institute of Architects Queens and Queens Foundation for Architecture.

Hazmat Modine: Saturday, Oct. 22, 7 p.m.
World-famous Hazmat Modine will return to Flushing Town Hall for another show stopping performance. Modine will be joined by 2019 National Heritage Fellow, balafon player and djeli Balla Kouyaté. Tickets for the event are $12 for Flushing Town Hall members, seniors and students with IDs and $18 for the public.
Lioness: Women in Jazz Concert Series (Part 1 of 3): Thursday, Oct. 27, 7:30 p.m.
The first of a three-part partnership series happening at Flushing Town Hall during the fall 2022 season will take place Oct. 27. Each concert will be 60 minutes long and include a Q&A session after each performance. This concert will feature guitarist/composer Amanda Monaco and her quartet Deathblow.
The purpose of each concert is to share the music of female composers with the community as well as the artistic process and methods practiced by these composers. Additionally, it’s a forum through which the audience can have a meaningful dialogue with the musicians and possibly gain a deeper connection with the music and the artistic process moving forward. Tickets for the event are $5 for the public and free for Flushing Town Hall members, seniors and students with IDs.
Archtober: Family Day: Saturday, Oct. 29, noon
Flushing Town Hall will partner with Archtober one more time for architecture and design month. Architecture activities, programs and exhibitions will again take place with the American Institute of Architecture Queens and Queens Foundation for Architecture.

Qwanqwa: The Ethiopian Supergroup: Saturday, Oct. 29, 8 p.m.
Ethiopian supergroup Qwanqwa will be coming to Flushing Town Hall for a performance like no other. This talented group of musicians will share their experimental sounds with roots in traditional East African music. They’ll also continue their mission of furthering cross-cultural dialogue across the globe through this show.
