In an effort to address health and wellness needs of New Yorkers, EmblemHealth held a Community Resource Day on Feb. 22 at its Flushing location to educate the public on free and confidential healthcare resources available to them.
EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care staff organized free informational classes, confidential sessions, tai chi and chair yoga to care for the body and mind of the Queens residents who attended.
Over 100 members of the Flushing community attended; classes were led in both English and Chinese. The day also included preventative care, with health screenings, annual checkups and vaccinations; mental health informational sessions; crime prevention and safety tips; Alzheimer’s support education; and information on supporting LGBTQ+ children and their emotional needs.
The resource day also highlighted the newly launched Mind and Body Well-Being Program. This program was started last September through the support of a $200,000 grant awarded by U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer. This initiative is the first of its kind for the Flushing Neighborhood Care location within EmblemHealth. It seeks to break the stigma surrounding seeking help for mental health and daily stressors.
“Physical health and mental health are deeply interconnected, and our Mind and Body Well-Being Program is one of the many ways we seek to bridge the two at Neighborhood Care,” said Nazneen Rahman, assistant vice president of EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care. “We are proud to host and support Community Resource Day with our local partners to help spread awareness of the personalized health and wellness services we bring to members and nonmembers every day.”
EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care staff were joined by local and citywide healthcare organization, Councilwoman Sandra Ung (Council District 20), constituent liaison for U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng (New York Congressional District 6), the New York City Police Department and AdvantageCare Physicians, a primary and specialty care practice serving the New York area that is part of the EmblemHealth family of companies.
EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care in Flushing is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 41-61 Kissena Blvd., Flushing, NY 11355. To learn more about the Flushing location’s events and available care, contact contact 800-447-0752 or neighborhood.flushing@emblemhealth.com.
