The Kiwanis Club of Glendale is continuing its decades-long tradition of offering the Kiwanis Scholarship Award to aid students living in both Glendale and Ridgewood.

The group will choose several students living in the communities of Glendale and Ridgewood who show academic excellence and have a sustained record of community service and award them up to $10,000 in scholarship money, according to Debbie Kueber of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale.

“We are heavy on community service. We look at that more so than the grades,” said Kueber, who added that the resumes for some of the high school students they considered were “impressive.”

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be graduating from the eighth grade and entering high school or must be enrolled as a freshman in a recognized college or university for the upcoming fall semester.

This year marks the 45th year that the Kiwanis Club of Glendale has been giving out scholarships to local students.

Keuber said the group also hosts a dinner to honor the students who won the award.

Students living in Ridgewood and Glendale looking to earn the scholarship can email applications to dakuber@gmail.com or send them in by mail to 67-13 Myrtle Ave., Glendale, NY 11385.

Completed applications from high school students must include a transcript, three recommendations and an essay that details what they will do with the award money. Applications are due by Friday, May 5,
