This fall, Flushing Town Hall presents a variety of programs open to the public varying from the women in comics creative conference to the Louis Armstrong monthly jazz jam and much more.
“Audiences of all ages, interest and curiosity can expect another very busy month with Flushing Town Hall’s programs,” said Ellen Kodadek, executive and artistic director of Flushing Town Hall. “We welcome the Women in Comics Creative Conference, our Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jams, popular Mini Global-Mashups: Iran meets Japan; partnership events with AIA Queens for Archtober – NYC’s citywide celebration of New York architecture, with a Short-Film Festival, and a Family Day: Designing the Future for Kids.”
Here’s a look at some of Flushing Town Hall’s upcoming events.
Grants Information Session: Wednesday, Oct. 4, 6 to 8 p.m. (Zoom)
Join Flushing Town Hall’s Arts Services Department for a free information session to learn about the Arts Grants for Queens and GO Queens Grant. They will review guidelines, grant cycle schedules, and best application practices. All sessions will be held in-person and in English unless otherwise noted. RSVPs are recommended. Flushing Town Hall advise that if you are applying for the GO Queens Grant, you must attend an information session. First-time applicants to the Arts Grants for Queens are required to attend an information session before applying. Any one member of an organization or artist group may attend an info session on behalf of their group.
The information sessions also take place on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Jackson Heights; Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Elmhurst; Thursday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Cambria Heights; and Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Jamaica.
Women in Comics Creative Conference: Sunday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The free Women in Comics Creative Conference serves to support the professional comic book community with programming directly addressing their needs via panel discussions, an industry symposium, art and writing workshops, wellness workshops and cosplay showcases. WinC is an artistic and informative initiative that began in May 2012. It serves to highlight the merit and craftwork of marginalized voices, especially that of women and Queer people of color, who work in various industries, such as comics, publishing, gaming, media, education and multimedia.
Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jam: Wednesday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m.
Open to professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz, music educators and serious hobbyists, Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jams is open to musicians who want to perform at Flushing Town Hall. All are welcome, regardless of instrument (vocalists, too!). There is a Steinway baby grand and drum kit are available at each Jam. Health and safety protocols will be in place so bring a mask, and people are encouraged to bring their own microphone. House Band and Jam Sessions are led by Carol Sudhalter, with Joe Vincent Tranchina, Scott Neumann and Eric Lemon. Anyone who doesn’t play Jazz but loves to listen is also welcome.
Tickets are $10 for general admission and free for members, students and jamming musicians.
Mini Global Mashup: Iran meets Japan: Sunday, Oct. 15, 1 p.m.
Flushing Town Hall’s Mini-Global Mashup series continues through 2023. Curated by acclaimed trumpeter and composer Frank London (The Klezmatics), the Mini-Global Mashup series is bringing together two amazing global music artists along with accompanists for an afternoon of music, conversation and exploration. On Oct. 15, Flushing Town Hall will welcome Martin Shamoonpour, the soulful musician from Iran, and intrepid keyboardist Shoko Nagai.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students with ID
Archtober! Architecture short-film festival: Thursday, Oct. 19, 6 p.m.
Experience New York City’s Architecture and Design Month, the annual festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions taking place during the month of October. Design has the power to solve some of the biggest issues facing cities today. Flushing Town Hall, in partnership with AIA Queens and the Queens Foundation for Architecture, is proud to present: Archtober! Architecture Short-Film Festival. Every year, AIA holds a Film Challenge that amplifies the stories of architecture projects that are transforming communities through the power of design and collaboration. Bring your family and enjoy a day of learning about the world being built around them in an exclusive screening of their best selections – films about regenerative architecture on indigenous land, affordable housing in New York City and more.

Partnership Award event with Louis Armstrong Educational Foundational & WBGO: Saturday, Oct.21, 11 a.m.
People can expect an unforgettable day of jazz excellence and celebration as The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation proudly presents “THE 2023 SATCHMO AWARD” @ A WBGO Jazz For Young People Concert Armstrong: Past Present and Future. Honoring NEA Jazz Master Reggie Workman, a living legend known for his lifelong dedication to jazz education and performance, Reggie Workman’s Current Creation for Armstrong promises to be a mesmerizing showcase of talent.

FTH Artist Meetup: Thursday, Oct. 26, 6 to 8 p.m.
This is a monthly meet up for artists of all disciplines from Queens and the greater New York City area. This is a space to gather and connect — to talk about current and upcoming projects and programs and ultimately build a network of creative support in Queens. Members of the Flushing Town Hall team will also be present to talk more about FTH and the resources available to artists. Drinks and light refreshments will be served.

Family Day Architecture Workshops: Sunday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m.
Flushing Town Hall, in partnership with AIA Queens and the Queens Foundation for Architecture, presents: Designing the Future for Kids: Family Day Architecture Workshops. Bring your family and join in on a number of engaging workshops that teach you about the world being built around you – and how to partake in it yourselves!
