The Msgr. Sherman Council No 5103 chapter of the Knights of Columbus is hosting an Easter food drive this Saturday, Mar. 9, in support of the Sacred Heart Food Pantry.
Volunteers will be stationed at two locations in Glendale: the Sacred Heart Academy’s school yard at 84-05 78th Ave. and at the Stop and Shop at 89-89 Union Tpke. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.
The Knights of Columbus are asking for non-perishable donations including flour, sugar, vegetable oil, peanut butter, cereal and canned soup.
Known for their charitable work, the council has been serving Glendale for 50 years. The organization hosts other charitable events, including a Thanksgiving food drive. Once a month, members volunteer at Our Lady of Fatima Church’s food drive and soup kitchen, which serves over 600 families.
Queens resident Salvatore Laurenzano, a member for the past eight years, hopes the food drive will help local families during their ongoing times of need. “We’re hoping for families to not struggle so much for these typing times. Inflations up… we help as best we could,” Laurenzano said.
According to Laurenzano, Sister Ann Marie, a retired nun, drives down monthly from Pennsylvania to run the Our Lady Of Fatima food drive.” Sister Ann Marie is amazing and the people she has working for her are some good people,” he said.
Residents interested in donating to the Easter drive can head over to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, located at 83-17 78th Ave., and drop items at designated boxes at the location.
The next food drive at Our Lady of Fatima Church is Saturday, Mar. 23, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
