Nearly a century after his tragic death in the line of duty, Patrolman Arthur Kenney’s legacy was commemorated in Woodhaven, with a street co-naming ceremony.
On Apr. 6, 1926, Kenney, serving with the 110th Precinct, was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend a robbery suspect. Ninety-eight years later, on Apr. 6, 2024, the community gathered to honor his sacrifice and dedication to public safety.
The corner of 80th Street and 90th Avenue now bears Kenney’s name, a tribute to his bravery and service. This significant honor was made possible through the efforts of the Newtown Historical Society, Council Member Joann Ariola and the Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society.
The ceremony attracted community members, local leaders, and law enforcement officers, all paying their respects to a local hero.
Following the street co-naming, attendees were invited to a reception at Neir’s Tavern to celebrate Kenney’s memory.
Nearly a century after his passing, his story remains a powerful testament to the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers to ensure the safety and well-being of the communities they serve.
