Historias! Global Mashup: Afro Dominicano (Afro-Caribbean Soul) Meets Maraca Bruja (Colombian Gaita)

Saturday, Oct. 19

Dance lesson at 7 p.m. and concert at 8 p.m.

The “Historias” Global Mashup fuses two New York-based Latinx bands from different genres and cultural backgrounds to create an unforgettable musical experience. Afro Dominicano and Maraca Bruja will take the stage as Afro-Carribean soul meets Columbian Gaita.

Prior to the performance, audience members can enjoy dance lessons and a moderated discussion led by poet and DJ Eliel Lucero in Spanish and English. They will also participate by sharing their own “Historias” on how Latinx music has shaped their lives in New York.

Afro Dominicano is a world music band centered around their perception of the “Afro-Carribean soul.”

The band blends traditional folkloric music from the Dominican Republic, including Perico Ripiao, Palo, Merengue de Orquesta and Bachata, with Reggae, Bembe, Calypso and Samba, Funk, Rock and other African rhythms.

Maraca Bruja is a local band performing traditional Gaita folkloric music from the Bolivar region of Colombia near la Sierra Nevada, which is believed to be the origin of the instrument.

Maraca Bruja was founded in the summer of 2019, as band members practiced together in Prospect Park to connect to their cultural roots and share their lived experiences. The Gaita is performed as an act of resistance, as the ancestral music has been invisible to the greater Colombian population, surviving solely through oral tradition.

This concert is supported by Historias, a multi-year programmatic initiative led by The Clemente in partnership with LxNY and supported by the Rauschenberg Foundation.

For those unable to attend events in person, Flushing Town Hall has launched its online viewing platform Culture Stream. Subscriptions start at $5 per month.
