The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning(JCAL) invites Queens residents to celebrate Black History Month through the art of West African dance.

This February, JCAL will host West African Dance at JCAL: A Black History Month Presentation. The live performances will take place on Friday, Feb. 21, and Saturday, Feb. 22, at 8 p.m. and will be led by Kofago Dance Ensemble and FANIKE! West African Dance Troupe.

For those interested in immersing themselves in the dance experience, JCAL is hosting a separate series of dance workshops with the same dance troupes, led by Bakary Fall of Kofago Dance Ensemble and Lenea Stevens of FANIKE! West African Dance Troupe. Participants can learn West African dance moves during the interactive workshops on Tuesday, Feb.11, and Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Kofago Dance Ensemble exists at the nexus of African dance traditions and the Black experience in America. As a dance company, it is focused on healing and ritual through the performing arts. FANIKE! African Dance Troupe is an African dance company that embraces and respects the dance, rhythm, and historic and growing culture tied to the African movement.

Founded in 1972, JCAL is a multidisciplinary arts center located in South East Queens. It offers a hub for residents to experience quality visual, performing, and literary arts and educational programs that encourage participation in the arts.

The live performances and dance workshops will occur at JCAL, located at 153-10 Jamaica Ave. Concert tickets are available for $20, and residents interested in both events can get a two-for-one bundle for $30. Click here to purchase tickets.
