Howard Beach park to be fixed

By Alex Davidson

Betty Braton, chairwoman of Community Board 10, said Astroturf will take the place of real grass that has been destroyed because of overuse.

“The conditions of the fields over there is terrible,” Braton said.

The chairwoman said she and other members of the board will be meeting in the upcoming weeks with city Department of Parks and Recreation officials to decide the exact amount of money needed to restore the fields. This is the second phase of construction at Lefferts Park, located at the intersection of Lefferts Boulevard and North Conduit Avenue.

Braton said she is seeking a large chunk of city funds at the meeting with city officials for the work at Lefferts Park.

Getting funds for the construction at Lefferts Park was a budget priority for Community Board 10 this fiscal year. Additional restoration work will be done at the Broad Channel ballfields between the Rockaway Peninsula and Howard Beach.

A similar ballfields restoration is taking place at Victory Field in Glendale. Marshall also allocated funds for a makeover of facilities at the field, which includes new perimeter fencing and the building of new bleacher seats.
