Big Hooray For The Queens Courier

I wanted to take the time to comment on your wonderful photo spread of the Memorial Day parades throughout Queens. Your paper’s coverage of such an important event is a credit to your staff’s hard work.
In particular, I would like to commend Photo Editor Toni Cimino for the pictures which documented the Maspeth parade. I thought those pictures, taken by photographer Allen Ngai, accurately portrayed the day’s activities. Ms. Cimino and Mr. Ngai did a terrific job.

A Bill Kresse Fan
I enjoy the cartoons that accompany your editorials each week.
Bill Kresse seems to depict in each picture exactly the theme of the editorial narrative. Keep up the good work.

Korean Workers Should Join A Union
Regarding your article about Korean workers being shortchanged, I say the next time you see or hear of a union rally, you should come and stand with us.
Unions have always fought for fair wages, health insurance and so many more rights for workers. Unfortunately being unregistered aliens allows some employers to take advantage of immigrant workers. Sometimes when the union approaches a job site, the workers rebel, thinking the union will get them fired - which is not true.
Becoming a union member will give you a voice; their motto is “there is strength in numbers,” and we are all fighting for the same thing.
Eventually the worker realizes he or she will not be 20 years old forever, and their families should have access to healthcare, so join in, be heard, go union and live better.

Land Of The Free
I was born in New York City 70 years ago and worked for 40 years and paid taxes and abided by the laws of the land. Now that I am retired, I have begun to notice an increase of people in the supermarkets and pharmacies using benefits cards and N.Y. State checks to pay for their purchases.
In the checkout line at the supermarket one woman in front of me had a bill for over $110.00. She spoke no English and paid for her purchase with a New York State ‘check’ for food. The cost to her - zero. Another woman who also spoke no English had a bill of $125.00 and she paid for her purchase with a benefits card. The cost to her - zero. The total for my purchases was $35.00. How much did I have to pay - $35.00!
The previous day I was in the local pharmacy picking up a prescription and noticed that the young man in front of me was speaking to the cashier in Spanish and when he was ready to pay for his prescription he gave the clerk a benefits card. The amount he had to pay was 50 cents. My prescription cost me over $30.00, and that is with insurance.
I always hear immigrants saying that they are coming to the United States to “Live the American Dream.” I do believe that is true if the immigrants can get ‘everything’ free.
So many of them do not want to learn English, do not pay taxes, do want to learn anything about the United States, and want to apply for any programs that will allow them to get something free-of-charge.
Much of our tax dollars are being paid to illegal immigrants who have been granted free food stamps, benefits cards, etc. Am I the only one who is thinking like this?
