The Mount Zion #32 Masonic Lodge and the King Cyrus Supreme Council have been raising funds for the students of P.S. 176 through various activities including their 3rd Annual BBQ held this past week at the school. Both organizations seek to generate funds needed for services and supplies needed by children not covered under the budget of the City of New York.
The Masons and the King Cyrus Supreme Council have already donated a sound system and various screens necessary for the schools projection system. This year their fundraising efforts will include two additional area schools, P.S. 132 and I.S. 59.
Last year the Masons began the Youth Literacy Basketball Program for children in grades 2 through 10. The program meets once a week on Saturdays throughout the school year for three hours. The children are given an hour-and-a-half of reading comprehension and instruction and are then rewarded with an hour-and-a-half of basketball instruction. The program is open to all levels and is non-competitive. Each child is taught the fundamentals of the game including special skills and conditioning. Last year 30 students took part in the program.
Councilman Leroy Comrie was given a special award by program director Kyle Bragg at the BBQ for his unparalleled dedication to the community and his invaluable help in getting a grant for the department of Youth Services for the Youth Literacy Basketball Program.
The program will be holding open enrollments again in September. The program is free and open to students from any school. For enrollment and information, call Director Kyle Bragg at 917-776-5233.
