Baysider Pursues Art Career

Bayside resident Nicholai Khan has found an inner peace since deciding to pursue art professionally several months ago and is hoping to share that feeling with others.
Khan has been creating art since he was a child. As a youngster he was not able to communicate well, and began using his drawings to help express himself to others.
However, it was only about seven months ago that Khan, who formerly worked as a construction foreman, began focusing on art as a career.
“What drove me to this was a dream. In that dream, I felt compelled to be an artist and put myself out there as an artist,” said Khan. He continued, “The one thing that always made sense to me was that that art was the sixth sense for me. It was always the overlying theme of my life.”
Khan describes his work as being meditative pieces. With his artwork, Khan said that he hopes to convey feelings of imagination and happiness that people will experience as the images hang in their homes, while also bringing prosperity to their households.
“I want people to love art,” he said. “I feel like life is passion and if you don’t have real passion in life you’re kind of missing out on a lot.”
In his paintings, Khan works with the artistic concepts of black stars and red stars. He explained that the black stars represent people who are less in tune with their mind, body and soul. Each point on the red star represents a sense, Khan said, also mentioning that a sixth sense can be accessed when all five are unified.
Khan also said that by using the red and black stars, he is illustrating what can happen when people take a leadership role in their own lives and what happens when a person is more aware of art, the world and themselves. He said that “art is almost like a form of…reaching enlightenment.”
“What I’m doing is building paintings from my heart, from my soul, from somewhere deep inside of me that I can’t even explain,” said Khan, who also said that he tries to be imaginative with his work. “The best way for me to explain it is put it in a painting.”
A member of the National Arts Club, Khan recently had his work exhibited there in a show entitled “Words Can Save a Life & Pictures Can Say…” It will be on display until August 31. The National Arts Club is located at 15 Gramercy Park South in Manhattan.
