Borough's swimmers shine

Nine different swimmers from Queens took home medals. First was Bianca Martinez of Ozone Park. She won a gold in the 100-meter breaststroke and silver in the 200-meter breaststroke and 400-meter medley relay.
Fresh Meadows' Timothy Nam won four bronze medals, Brian Korelewski of Floral Park won the bronze in the 400-meter freestyle relay, Chris Olwell, also of Floral Park, earned three bronzes, Gabriel Yanez, a Woodhaven native, also scored a bronze in the 400-meter relay, and Caitlin Winkler of Forest Hills left with a silver in the 800-meter freestyle and a bronze in the 800-meter freestyle relay.

Former William Bryant star John Kardoulias was the lone Queens grappler to place, winning a bronze medal in the men's open 213-pound freestyle division. The Astoria native dropped his opening match, to the eventual gold medalist, Stephen Spiegeleire of Long Island, but rebounded to win his final three tilts. He pinned Colby Jorden of Central, out-pointed Shane Engel of Hudson Valley, and topped Andrew Aronstam of Central. In Judo, Jord Kidwell of Whitestone took home a bronze in the men's open 90-kilogram section.
In open weightlifting, Ericka Dice won gold in the open light heavyweight division. The Rego Park native lifted 180 kilograms, Jamaica's Denise Gray won silver in the heavyweight division by hoisting up 137 kilograms, and Oscar Novakovsky netted a bronze among light heavyweights.

The borough impressed in masters gymnastics, too. Flushing resident Debbie Riegelsberger won four medals, including silver in the balance beam and all-around competition. Woodhaven's Wilson Villafana won gold in the floor exercise and vault, Jose Delgado of East Elmhurst won silver in the floor exercise, and Megan Paulus of Astoria took home gold in the vault and silver in uneven bars and floor exercise.

In archery's scholastic division, Benjamin Chu of Flushing won gold, Fresh Meadows' Justin Rivera departed with silver, and Flushing's Tungying Chuwon won silver in the open category
