All good things must end, including Marretta’s Bakery and Caf/ in Bayside.
After 32 years as a staple of the community, the bakery located at 41-06 Bell Boulevard has shut its doors for good.
Posted on the shop’s front door is a letter from the former bakery’s owners, Anna and Carl Marretta. Addressed to their devoted patrons the letter explains that after three decades in Bayside and 40 years in the business, the couple has decided to retire.
While the bakery has been closed for over two weeks, the couple can still be found inside the building completing last minute preparations for the store’s official closing on November 27.
Since the closing, Anna said many customers have stopped by and have been surprised and disappointed to find their bakeshop was no longer in operation.
“A lot of people came in here for their morning coffee; we had a lot of commuters stop in here,” Carl said.
The couple said that they were looking forward to retiring. “We’re ready to relax a while,” Anna said.
The Marrettas also look forward to having time to work on their farm and enjoying life at their home in Long Island. They will also have more time to spend traveling and with their five grandchildren who range in age from 7 to 12.
The bakery initially opened in Flushing before relocating on Bell Boulevard, and while the Marrettas have earned their retirement after more than 40 years in the business, the store’s closing has disappointed the community.
“I think [Marretta’s Bakery closing] was a loss for the community,” said Ed Teran, President of American Vision, located at 41-01 Bell Blvd, across the street from the eatery.
