There are only a few more days to enter your business in the New York City Department of Small Business Services’ (SBS) eighth annual Neighborhood Achievement Awards, which will be presented during the summer of 2009
“The Neighborhood Achievement Awards recognizes the strength and stability of the more than 300 neighborhoods that make up the city and spotlights the leaders in our communities,” said Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Robert W. Walsh.
There are eight categories where nonprofit organizations, businesses, educational institutions, business improvement districts, local development corporations, merchant associations and other neighborhood associations can apply or nominate others for, according to the Department of Small Business Services’ website.
Development, place making, partnership and workforce innovation are among some of the awards these businesses and organizations are nominated for.
Years ago, the ceremony use to be a lot smaller when the Business Improvement Districts (BID) ran it, according to Laura Postiglione, a spokesperson for SBS.
“When Commissioner Robert Walsh joined the agency in 2002, the smaller awards event for the BIDs eventually grew into the larger event we hold today at Gracie Mansion in July,” she Postiglione said. “Many feel it’s a real honor to be nominated.
Steven Stark, of Beacon Paint & Hardware, an honoree from last year’s award ceremony, said that it is an honor and a reflection of the hard work put into the businesses.
“It reflects our dedication to maintaining the highest degree of customer service and our commitment to being a great neighbor,” Stark said of their nomination.
To nominate a business or organization, applications can be found on the New York City Department of Small Business Services’ web site, which is https://www.nyc.gov/html/sbs/html/neighborhood/awards.shtml. The application deadline for the event is March 6 at 5 p.m.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion will hand out the awards in July.
