Catholic Church Launches a ‘fortnight for Freedom’

Diocese Holds Voter Registration Drive

The Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens is joining with Catholics throughout the United States to observe the “Fortnight for Freedom,” a call by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, which begins today, Thursday, June 21, and continues through Wednesday, July 4.

As part of this campaign, the diocese will launch a non-partisan voter registration campaign over the next four months. Voter registration drives will take place at all 197 parishes throughout Brooklyn and Queens.

Church bells will ring throughout the two boroughs at noon today, which coincides with the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, two martyrs of the faith, and will ring again at noon on July 4, Independence Day.

Tomorrow, Friday, June 22, Catholic young people from all over Brooklyn and Queens will begin the diocesan celebration by joining together for a 12-hour marathon of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Nocturnaladorationfollowsa7p.m. Mass at The Church of St. Joseph, located at 856 Pacific St. in Prospect Heights, and ends at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

The fortnight is a kickoff to encouraging Catholics to take seriously the responsibilities of being a faithful citizen.
