The Corona Community Action Network (Corona CAN) gave awards to local business owners and received a grant from the Queens Borough President’s Office last week during a special ceremony at La Estrella Latina restaurant on 104th Street. As noted, the nonprofit business group recognized merchants who constantly contribute to such community events as holiday lighting, street fairs and clean ups with trophies. Corona CAN President Ruben Peña got a surprise when Queens Borough President Helen Marshall presented his organization with $3,000 to update and publish a new merchant directory for the area. In photo are (top row, from left) Peter Alfano of Alfano Plumbing & Parts; Maria Fierro of TD Bank; Romulo Canela of Estrella Latina; self-employed real estate agent John Kim; and (front row, from left) Christian Cassagnol of Community Board 4; Emily Páez of State Sen. José Peralta’s Office; Marshall; Ivettelis Rodriguez of City Council Member Julissa Ferrera’s Office; and Peña.
