A dramatic airlift over New York Harbor helped save the life of a 60-year-old skipper, Captain Aly Akl, according to police.
At around 10 p.m. Tuesday, NYPD Harbor authorities and Detective Robert Brager of the Emergency Services Unit were deployed to the Grey Shark, the name of Akl’s 330-foot commercial cargo ship, which was anchored between the Verrazano Bridge and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.
Akl, who had suffered a heart attack, was stabilized, then airlifted to Staten Island University North Hospital. Brager accompanied him in a rescue basket on the helicopter en route to the hospital, where Akl remains in stable condition.
