Over $5 million in federal FEMA funding is coming to the aid of vulnerable city schools.
Senator Charles Schumer and Assemblymember Phillip Goldfeder announced $5,277,661 will be heading to the city’s School Construction Authority (SCA) in support of Sandy-damaged schools, including P.S. 43, P.S. 256 and P.S. 198 in the Rockaways.
“Too many hardworking families in the Rockaways have lost so much as a result of Sandy,” Goldfeder said. “It’s been nearly a year since the storm tore apart our schools and this funding will help rebuild our schools.”
P.S. 198 Goldie Maple Academy’s basement was inundated with more than six feet of storm water during Sandy. Flood water entered the boiler room through the school’s doors, garage and through the foundation.
Work to get the school back to normal included providing both security and construction materials. Emergency and temporary repairs were made, including installing fencing and oil tanks. Building safety inspections addressed hazardous mold and asbestos in the boiler room that arose as a result of the flooding.
For its damages and for emergency safety protection, P.S. 198 will receive $2,277,005.
Public School 43, The School by the Sea, will receive $1,640,589 in federal funding and $1,360,067 is on its way to P.S. 256 on Beach 135th Street.
Schumer said these funds will help reimburse the cost of repairs to all of the schools.
