A World War II hero shared his experiences with students at St. Brigid Catholic Academy on the Ridgewood/Bushwick border in Brooklyn during a visit last Friday, Mar. 7. Before an assembly of 40 students, Rocco Moretto spoke about his participation with the 1st Infantry Division (also known as the Big Red One) in five major campaigns of World War II, including D-Day. Moretto is one of only two infantry members who survived the Allied invasion of Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. Organized by the school and the United War Veterans Council, the visit was part of ongoing lessons about D-Day in the months leading up to the invasion’s 70th anniversary. Moretto is pictured with some of the children who participated in the assembly.
