An allegedly armed suspect was fatally shot by police following a pursuit in South Ozone Park early Sunday morning, authorities said.

According to authorities, two plain-clothed officers were driving an unmarked police car southbound on 135th Street at 1:33 a.m. Sunday morning when they approached a double-parked SUV with a man standing next to it holding an open container of alcohol. When they approached the man the officers observed a firearm in his waistband.

When police attempted to engage the suspect, the 32-year-old man fled on foot, and the officers pursued him.

As the suspect approached the corner of 135th Street and 116th Avenue, a second unmarked police car with three officers assigned to the 106th Precinct stopped the suspect. Police said the suspect then reached for a weapon in his waistband, causing four officers to discharge their weapons.

The suspect was struck several times in the torso. Paramedics rushed to the scene and brought him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officers involved in the shooting were brought to Long Island Jewish Medical Center for treatment and evaluation.

A .40-caliber Hi-Point firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.
