A man who received thousands of dollars from charities after claiming his brother died on 9/11 was arrested again after cops found dozens of fraudulent credit cards in his suitcase at LaGuardia Airport.
Daniel T. Djoro, 46, of Manhattan was traveling to Miami on Frontier Airlines on Sept. 12 when Port Authority Police stopped him to check his luggage, a spokesperson for the Port Authority said. Inside, they found 66 credit cards, two social security cards with different names and a New York State benefit card.
Djoro was arrested and charged with possession of a forged instrument.
Djoro made headlines in 2002 when he falsely claimed that his brother had died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He was awarded $272,800 from the Red Cross and Safe Horizon, according to the New York Times. He was flown from Michigan to New York by the Red Cross and put up in a hotel before receiving the money.
He was facing arson charges in Michigan before he filed the claim, in which he told the organizations that his brother was at the World Trade Center for a business meeting. Lawyers discovered that Djoro, who claimed his brother’s name was Daniel Zagbre, had used this alias for himself.
Djoro was one of 16 defendants who were charged with grand larceny, insurance fraud and other crimes for falsely claiming their family members were victims in the attacks. He was sentenced to four years in jail.
