The massively popular Netflix original series “Orange is the New Black” will be filming for its upcoming fifth season inside the Department of Corrections facility in Kew Gardens on Friday.
According to the Office of Citywide Event Coordination and Management, the hit prison comedy-drama will be filming interior dialogue scenes inside of 126-01 82nd Ave.. from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Nov. 4.
The production crew will need to block off the north side of 82nd Avenue between 126th and 132nd streets for half a block; Queens Boulevard between 80th Road and 82nd Avenue on the north side for the entire length of the block; and the southern portion of Queens Boulevard between 83rd Avenue and the Van Wyck Expressway for half the block.
“Orange is the New Black,” created by Jenji Kohan, is a story about Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman who has been sentenced to serve 15 months in prison after being convicted of transporting money to her drug-dealing girlfriend, and all the trials and tribulations of being in a minimum security prison.
The series, which also stars Laura Prepon and Laverne Cox, has been nominated for multiple awards including Emmys, Golden Globes, and the Peabody Award. In 2015, actress Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role.
