An 81-year-old man has died of injuries after being struck by a car in Astoria earlier this month, police announced on Friday.

At 9:03 p.m. on Dec. 21, police responded to a 911 call regarding a pedestrian struck at 31st Street and 37th Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers found 81-year-old Soliman Leano of 37th Avenue in Long Island City lying on the roadway with trauma to the head and torso.

An investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad found that a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, operated by a 43-year-old man, was traveling southbound on 31st Street while Leano was crossing 31st Street in a crosswalk with an unknown pedestrian signal.

Law enforcement sources said the car struck Leano, then swerved to the left and hit a support column for the elevated train tracks before coming to a stop. The driver did not suffer any injuries from the crash.

EMS responded to the scene and transported Leano to Cornell Hospital. Leano died of his injuries on Dec. 22.

No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
